Bridge, roadway to be named in honor of fallen officer

AUBURN, Mass. — A Massachusetts police officer killed in the line of duty is having a bridge and stretch of highway named in his honor.

A ceremony is scheduled for Monday at the Auburn Public Library to honor the memory of Auburn Officer Ronald Tarentino Jr.

The 42-year-old Tarentino was shot in the back in May 2016 by a man he had pulled over. That man was later killed by police.

The Swanson Road bridge over Interstate 290 in Auburn and a portion of Route 9 in Leicester are being dedicated in his name. In addition to being an officer in Auburn, he lived with his wife and three children in Leicester and had previously served with the Leicester Police Department.

Markers will be placed at each location.
