Mass. state rep. Joyce Spiliotis dies at 65

Massachusetts State Rep. Joyce Spiliotis has died at age 65.

Spiliotis was a democrat from North Reading and represented the 12th Essex District in the Mass. House. She was elected in 2003.

The cause of death was not immediately known but there had been reports Spiliotis was battling cancer.

Spiliotis was in her fifth term on Beacon Hill. She won re-election in an uncontested race in November.

Mass. House minority leader Bradley Jones said Spiliotis was a "fierce advocate for causes she believed in and matters critical to her constituents."

"Joyce was a dedicated and enthusiastic legislator from the moment she took office in 2003 and was devoted to her family and to the residents of the Twelfth Essex District, said Jones."

A former Peabody city councilor, Spiliotis served as vice chairman of the Joint Committee on Municipalities and Regional government, and was also a member of the House Ways and Means Committee.

DeLeo described Spiliotis as a "down-to-earth, funny and universally liked" lawmaker who fought passionately for her constituents.

Spiliotis is survived by her husband Richard and two daughters.
