Mass. State Police investigate fatal crash on I-290 in Auburn

AUBURN (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred on the eastbound side of I-290 in Auburn near exit 11 on Monday.

According to Massachusetts State Police, around 5:25 p.m., police say 51-year-old Catherine Berthiaume, of Shrewsbury, was driving on I-290 East in the right lane by exit 10. For reasons unknown, Berthiaume exited the vehicle as it was moving and was struck by a tractor trailer.

Berthiaume's car traveled approximately 600 feet on I-290 before coming to rest in the high speed travel lane against the guardrail.

The operator of the tractor trailer remained at the scene and spoke with state police.

The eastbound lanes of the highway were closed for a period of time during rush hour, but reopened after crews had cleared the scene.

Police are still trying to determine why the woman got out of her vehicle.
