Mass. Senate candidates to square off in debates

BOSTON (AP) - The candidates vying for John Kerry's former U.S. Senate seat are preparing for the next round of pre-primary debates.

A consortium of Boston media outlets is hosting separate 30-minute debates on Wednesday night for the Democratic and Republican hopefuls.

The Democrats, U.S. Reps. Stephen Lynch and Edward Markey, will be the first to debate, followed by the three Republicans: Former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan, Cohasset businessman Gabriel Gomez and state Rep. Daniel Winslow.

The debates will be held at the studios of WCVB-TV and will be moderated by veteran journalist R.D. Sahl, special correspondent for New England Cable News.

The three Republicans are also scheduled to hold a debate in Springfield on Thursday.

The primary is scheduled for April 30 and the special election for June 25.
