Mass. Sen. Warren to weigh Hagel nomination

SPRINGFIELD (AP) - U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren says she is reserving judgment on President Barack Obama's nomination of former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel as secretary of defense.

Warren told reporters on Tuesday that she is looking forward to hearing more from Hagel at the Senate hearings that will be held on his nomination. The new senator spoke during the official opening of her western Massachusetts office in Springfield.

Some Republican senators have already expressed opposition to Hagel while other Democrats have also reserved judgment until the former Nebraska senator further explains his views on Israel and Iran.

Hagel also upset gay rights groups in 1998 when he referred to James Hormel, President Bill Clinton's nominee as ambassador to Luxembourg, as "openly, aggressively gay."
