Mass. plans hearings on all-electronic toll plan

BOSTON (AP) — State transportation officials are looking for the public to weigh in on proposals to switch to an all-electronic tolling system on the Massachusetts Turnpike.

Under the system, drivers will no longer be able to stop at a toll booth and pay cash.

Instead, tolls will be collected electronically through a driver's E-ZPass transponder or by a new system which allows a camera to record a license plate number and send the registered owner of the car a bill through the mail.

The first of three public hearings is scheduled for Thursday at the state transportation building in Boston to discuss environmental impacts of the project.

Hearings are also scheduled next Tuesday at Worcester City Hall and next Thursday at Springfield City Hall.

The state is also planning an all-electronic tolling system for the Tobin Bridge.
