Mass. officer shoots own leg at practice range

HOLDEN, Mass. (AP) - The Worcester district attorney says the Assumption College deputy police chief is in good condition after accidentally shooting his right foot during a training program.

DA Joseph Early Jr. said 55-year-old Keith Hough was wounded when his gun fired Thursday morning as he was returning it to its holster.

Early said Hough was participating in live-fire training conducted by a private vendor, Blue Line Corp. He was taken to University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester.

Holden Police Chief George Sherrill tells the Worcester Telegram & Gazette the accident happened just after 8 a.m. at a mobile range in a trailer used for practice shooting by police from several departments. It was parked in front of the old fire station on Main Street in Holden.

State police with the district attorney's office are investigating.
