Mass. man held after woman found on road

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. (AP) - A Lawrence man who was arrested after witnesses reported seeing a woman thrown from his moving car has been charged with drunken and unlicensed driving.

Henry Matos was ordered held without bail Monday after a judge revoked his bail on unrelated charges. The judge continued the current case against Matos until next month.

State police said the 37-year-old woman hurt in the incident was in critical condition, but was expected to survive.

On Sunday, witnesses reported a woman was laying in the median strip on Interstate 495 in Merrimac after being thrown from a car.

Police later pulled Matos over. They allege he smelled strongly of alcohol.

Police say he and his brother, a passenger, told them in separate interviews that the woman jumped from the car on her own during an argument.
