WORCESTER, Mass. (AP)- A prison inmate has been sentenced to 42 to 45 years for stabbing a guard at the maximum security Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center last year.
The Worcester Telegram and Gazette reports 37-year-old Rarn Pak pleaded guilty Friday to charges including armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery on a correction officer. He'll serve the new sentence after a 7-to-10-year arson sentence he received in 2010.
Prosecutor Daniel Bennett said Pak stabbed 28-year-old Nathan Beauvais in the neck with a prison-made knife a day after the officer confiscated his illegal cooking device. The blade broke off in Beauvais' neck. Doctors removed it without damaging Beauvais' spinal cord. He's recovering but hasn't returned to work.
Pak's lawyer asked for a 12-to-15-year sentence, saying Pak mistrusts authority after being in Cambodian refugee camps as a child.
