Mass. high court chief to give annual address

BOSTON (AP) - Chief Justice Roderick Ireland of the state Supreme Judicial Court is preparing to give his annual address to the legal community.

The Massachusetts Bar Association Bench-Bar Symposium also will feature remarks by Trial Court Chief Justice Paula Carey.

The symposium will be held Wednesday at the John Adams Courthouse in Boston.

Ireland began his career on the bench as a judge in Boston Juvenile Court in 1977. He was appointed to the Massachusetts Appeals Court in 1990.

Ireland was appointed as the Supreme Judicial Court's first African-American justice in 1997, and sworn in as chief justice in 2010. He is the 36th chief justice to lead the SJC.
