Mass. congressional hopefuls stockpiling cash

BOSTON (AP) - Sen.-elect Edward Markey hasn't formally resigned his U.S. House seat yet, but the Democratic candidates hoping to replace him are already stockpiling cash for the anticipated special election.

Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian will report raising about $308,000 during second quarter of the year while Milford state Sen. Katherine Clark says she's raised nearly $500,000 since the start of the year.

Medford state Rep. Carl Sciortino says he's raised about $350,000 since the start of the year while Belmont state Sen. William Brownsberger will report raising $386,000 during the same period.

Framingham state Sen. Karen Spilka says she's raised about $200,000 in the second quarter.

One Republican, attorney Frank Addivinola, is also running.

The date of the election will be set after Markey is sworn in Tuesday to fill John Kerry's old Senate seat.
