Mass.-based TripAdvisor scrubs warnings of rape from website, reports say

NEEDHAM, Mass. — More than a dozen travelers from across the country say Needham-based TripAdvisor is deleting their reviews that give firsthand accounts of rape, blackouts and other injuries suffered during vacations to Mexico.

The allegations were brought to light Wednesday following an extensive investigation by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The tourists who spoke to the newspaper said their posts were often removed because the website labeled them as “hearsay.”

In a statement, TripAdvisor said it has now updated its policies, saying, “We believe any first-hand experience should be posted to our site as a means to communicate to other consumers looking for information on where they should travel.”
