Mass. AG: The road to political nowhere?

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – Is the job of Massachusetts Attorney General the "Road to nowhere?"

The position so many have tried, and failed, to launch a bigger political career is still without candidates with a year left until the election.

"The attorney general's office may look to be a launching pad, but it hasn't been shown to be a winning launching pad," said former Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone.

Martha Coakley, Tom Reilly and Scott Harshbarger are all prime examples, though Coakley is running for Governor of Mass.

Leone said the AG position, while political, is very different from a legislative job because it's bound by law and not crafting policy.

"As attorney general, you are on record as having taken positions on very difficult issues around a whole spectrum of matters," said Leone. "That record can help you or it can hurt you depending on who the people are that you're going to rely upon to get elected if you want to run beyond attorney general."

"If you are a great attorney general, as we hope most of us were, it also means we have created some level of enemies," said former Mass. Attorney General Scott Harshbarger. "People who don't agree with you. You have edges, you have a profile."

The deadline to get into the AG race in Mass. is May 6, 2014.
