BOSTON (AP)- State Attorney General Martha Coakley is warning Massachusetts homeowners to beware of solicitations that can appear to come from a government office while demanding payment for a home deed by a certain date.
Coakley says some deed collection services send mailings that offer to sell deed copies at rates between $50 and $90.
But she says homeowners can get a deed copy either free or for a small fee by visiting the Registry of Deeds in person or online.
Coakley says at least five companies have solicited Massachusetts homeowners by attempting to sell them deed copies at much more than the actual cost of the documents.
