Markey wins race in 5th Congressional District

Updated:

BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) Ed Markey has won the race in the newly redrawn 5th Congressional District.

The Democrat is currently serving in the 7th Congressional District, but ran for re-election in district 5 due to redistricting. He is a ranking member of the Natural Resource Committee and a senior member of the Energy and Commerce Committee. Rep. Markey lives in Malden.

In FOX 25's final mini-debate, opponent Tom Tierney said he ran against Markey because it was time for a change and claimed his opponent had been acting in a "partisan manner." Markey replied by saying that some Republicans in Congress want to slash things like NIH funding and solar energy. He says he wants to go back to Washington to keep "fighting those fights."

Markey also said he has worked with Republicans throughout his career and will continue to do so.
