Markey celebrates victory in Mass. Senate race

MEDFORD, Mass. (AP) - U.S. Sen.-elect Edward Markey is celebrating what he called a "tremendous victory" and is looking forward to the challenge of representing all of Massachusetts.

The Democrat, who has served in the House for more than 36 years, stopped at a restaurant in Medford on Wednesday to thank voters for their support in Tuesday's special election to fill the seat formerly held by John Kerry. Markey won with 55 percent of the vote, compared to 45 percent for Republican Gabriel Gomez.

Markey shifts from representing his congressional district to all of Massachusetts as a senator. He said it will require an understanding of every aspect of the state's economy and its "hopes and dreams."

Markey said he expected to be sworn in to the Senate sometime after July Fourth.
