Manhole explosions block off parts of downtown Brockton

BROCKTON, Mass. — Early Monday morning, parts of downtown Brockton were blocked off as crews responded to reports of manholes exploding.

The fire department tweeted about the incident just after 12:30 a.m., asking everyone to avoid the area.

A FOX25 photographer found this scene near Main Street and White Avenue.

When the photographer arrived, he said the area was blocked off in two spots, but said there didn't appear to be any damage.

The fire department told FOX25 the cause of the explosions were secondary power lines burned underground.

National Grid responded to the scene. According to the National Grid website, there were no power outages in the area.

"The good news is no one ever actually lost their power, so this is nothing compared to the scope of what we had back in July when we had explosions all around the downtown," Brockton Mayor Bill Carpenter said.

This comes just about a month after a similar incident in Malden. A transformer fire was blamed for the problem there.
