Manager of Sweet Tomatoes has long road of recovery, says mom

NEWTON, Mass. — The young manager of the Newton restaurant that a car crashed into on Tuesday is stable, but has a long road to recovery.

Casey Vaughan's mother Janine sent a statement to FOX25's Robert Goulston, providing an update on her daughter's condition.

"She is stable. Had surgery yesterday on her femur and has burns on her right side. She has staples in her head and has severe pain. Many cuts and bruises," said Vaughan's mother.

Vaughn is the 24-year-old manager of the Sweet Tomatoes restaurant in Newton. Tuesday night, an SUV driven by Brad Casler smashed into the Washington Street restaurant, killing two and injuring nearly a dozen, including Vaughan.

"She asks about the customers and coworkers and their condition. Our prayers go out to the family that lost their love one's and her coworkers/families on their recovery," said Janine.

Hedy Jarras, the owner of Sweet Tomatoes, issued a statement Thursday night.

"We are so devastated by the tragic event that took the lives of two of our patrons, Eleanor Miele and Gregory Morin. We would like to extend our utmost gratitude to the first responders and all who have reached out in concern. The victims and their families will forever be in our thoughts and prayers as we continue to grieve with our community."

The cause of the crash remains under investigation and charges haven't been filed.
