SAUGUS, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com)— A Saugus man faces multiple charges for allegedly shooting his bulldog after the dog bit a 9-month-old baby on Sunday.

Richard Maltais, 50, allegedly shot his dog three times in the head outside of his home with a handgun, Saugus police reported. The English bulldog, named Spike, allegedly became aggressive and bit multiple people including a child. Spike was a rescue dog.

Maltais told FOX 25 that he had Spike for a year, and he was never aggressive before that incident.

Police arrived at the home Sunday afternoon and found the bulldog under the house’s deck. They searched Maltais's home and discovered a handgun, rifle, and a box of ammunition. Maltais does not have a license to carry firearms.

Maltais faces charges of animal cruelty and possessing a firearm without a firearm identification card. Police did not say when he was expected to appear in court.
