Man drinking at Scituate bar picks up 60-inch TV, walks out the door

SCITUATE, Mass. — Friday the 13th was unlucky for a well-known restaurant on Scituate Harbor after a thief made the picture-perfect getaway.

But, luckily, the theft of a 60-inch television was caught on camera.

“Stealing is one of the hardest things in this business and when it’s done by customers, it’s even worse,” Mill Wharf Restaurant’s general manager Stephan Hill explained to Boston 25 News.

Just before 9 p.m. Friday night, while the restaurant was packed, a man who had been drinking at the bar stole a 60-inch television that was waiting to be installed above the bar the next morning.

“It’s almost like carrying a door out of the building, that’s the size of it,” restaurant owner Bob Warner remarked. “You know, the thing was gigantic. It's incredible they'd have the nerve."

Two big-screen TVs were in boxes in the hallway. The thief apparently just grabbed one and headed for the door. But surveillance video caught him in the parking lot.

That surveillance shows the man carrying a large box across a busy parking lot and then down the street.

Hill has worked at the restaurant for 24 years and says nobody recognized the guy.

“I don't think he's a regular,” he said. “None of our regulars would treat us like that. I think it was someone randomly. Once a thief, always a thief as far as I'm concerned."

The restaurant has 10 security cameras, but they were down for 48 hours for a scheduled upgrade planned for the next morning.

Police are investigating.
