Man dies following explosion at Ayer business

AYER, Mass. — One man has died following an explosion in Ayer Friday night.

Emergency responders were called to Advanced Vacuum Systems on Fitchburg Road just before 5:30 p.m. Friday for a reported explosion. Officials say the initial investigation suggests a pressure vessel malfunction caused the explosion.

Two employees were taken to the hospital with injuries.

The Middlesex District Attorney says a man in his 50s was later pronounced dead. He has not yet been identified.

Two mutual aid firefighters also sustained minor injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.
