Man convicted of 2016 East Boston assault indicted for separate fatal attack

BOSTON — A man recently released from jail for an assault in Belle Isle Marsh has been indicted for the death of a man in the same place.

Michael Bruzzese was convicted of assaulting a 67-year-old man in the marsh in June 2016 and has now been indicted for the assault and death of a man in May 2016.

Daniel Pepe, 83, was walking in the marsh when he called his family to say he had been assaulted and was bleeding pretty badly. However, when emergency medical technicians found him on a park bench, he was unable to communicate what happened.

Pepe had severe injuries to his face and head. He died three days later.

In both assaults, the victims’ keys had been taken. Pepe’s car was found in the parking lot of the park, where he left it.

Bruzzese served 18 months in jail for the June assault, but was indicted a few weeks after his release for the May 2016 assault. Bruzzese was arrested Tuesday morning at a temporary residence in Cambridge.
