Police responded to a car crash on Route 195 west and noticed that one of the drivers involved, Luis Manuel Medeiros, 42, of Fall River, Mass. was intoxicated, officials say. Medeiros had a passenger in the car, a 7-year-old child, who was not wearing a seat belt.
Witnesses say they followed Medeiros after they saw him driving erratically on Route 195. He reportedly then hit a tractor-trailer in the Seekonk area. Medeiros fled after the initial crash and continued to drive erratically into the state of Rhode Island. He was allegedly driving faster than 90 miles per hour and then rear-ended another car, which caused it to hit a third.
Medeiros failed field sobriety tests at the scene of the crash, officials say. He was arrested and transported to the Lincoln Woods Barracks, while the child was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Police contacted DSS, who later took custody of the child.
Medeiros was held overnight and will be arraigned on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, reckless driving, driving with a suspended/revoked license and chemical test refusal.
