Man accused of assaulting Arlington minor has died

ARLINGTON, Mass (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A Medford man accused of assaulting a minor in Arlington has died after an apparent suicide attempt.

A source tells FOX 25 that Patrick Barry, 21, told officials he had taken a large amount of pills; that disclosure came at some point while he was in custody.

Barry was arrested last Thursday night by Arlington police and arraigned Friday for allegedly assaulting a 14-year-old girl in Arlington as she walked home from school earlier this month.

He was out on parole for a previous alleged assault when he was arrested.

In a statement Arlington Police Chief Frederick Ryan calls it an unfortunate situation and says, "Mr. Barry made no statements about his health during his arrest or at any time before he was arraigned."

Arlington police added that he was asked at booking if he was suicidal, and he said he wasn't.

Barry was arraigned Friday morning and turned over to the Middlesex Sheriff's office. A statement from the office of Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian says Barry was given a routine medical screening. It also says that he was transported to the hospital for emergency treatment, but it does not say when.

Barry died Friday morning at Beth Israel Hospital.

Arlington police, the Middlesex DA's office and Middlesex sheriff's office are now investigating his death.
