Malden school officials, police investigate 'sexting' incident

MALDEN, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Malden Public School officials are working with police to investigate a reported sexting incident involving a group of 7th graders at Linden STEAM Academy.

Superintendent Dr. David DeRuosi, Jr. said school administrators were made aware of an incident Wednesday involving a 7th grade girl sending illicit photos to two boys in her grade earlier this week.

DeRuosi said the incident didn't happen on school grounds or with school equipment.

"It has to be an educational moment for our kids. So that we look at them and say, 'This is wrong, here's all the bad that can happen from this both legally and personally,'" said DeRuosi. "And then create that safe environment where kids who may be a victim of this, who may have just received a text like this, feel comfortable and safe enough to say, 'I can bring this to an adult.'"

The students' parents were brought into the school to meet with officials Thursday. All three were out of school Thursday and Friday but were to return Monday.

Investigators believe the photos were passed on to other students in the 7th grade but weren't sure how far they may have spread.

There is currently no word what punishment the students involved could face.
