BRAINTREE, Mass. - Major delays were reported on Route 128 south near the Braintree Split early Thursday morning after a car caught fire and became fully engulfed.
Boston 25 News anchor Julie Grauert said the incident occurred near Route 37 just before 7 a.m.
The road was closed completely for a period of time as crews worked to extinguish the intense flames coming from the vehicle.
That closure caused massive delays on the roads, and detours were needed to be put into place.
Grauert, on Boston 25 Morning News, warned viewers to avoid Route 128 south as drive times skyrocketed to more than an hour just to go six miles from Canton to Braintree.
According to state police, it was initially a two-vehicle crash, one of the cars caught fire as a result.
The driver of that was a 54-year-old woman from Brockton. She was brought to South Shore Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was also brought to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
No citations have been issued yet. The crash remains under investigation.
