BOSTON (AP)- U.S. Senate hopeful Stephen Lynch is faulting fellow Democratic Senate candidate Edward Markey for a comment that Lynch said compared the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision to the most infamous ruling in the court's history.
During a speech this week, Markey called for overturning the Citizens United decision, which paved the way for a flood of campaign cash from corporations and unions.
In making his argument, Markey pointed to the need to overturn the notorious 1857 Dred Scott decision, which had affirmed slavery.
Lynch said that while the Citizens United ruling is one of the court's worst, nothing can compare to Dred Scott.
Markey defended his comment, saying Citizens United ruling is "poisoning the democratic process." He said when the court issued the Dred Scott decision, people rose up to challenge it.
