Lowell teen drowns in high school pool

TYNGSBOROUGH, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) - Police say a 15-year-old boy drowned Tuesday at Greater Lowell Technical High School in Tyngsborough.

Tyngsborough Deputy Police Chief Richard Howe said emergency responders answered a call for help at the school at about 11:45 a.m.

Howe said police and firefighters performed CPR, but the boy was pronounced dead after being rushed to Lowell General Hospital.

A spokeswoman for the Middlesex District Attorney's Office said the drowning appeared to be accidental and the victim was a freshman at the school.

Authorities say the victim is Danny Svay, of Lowell.

Greater Lowell Tech freshman Sonya Lugo says she knew the fellow freshman who died and confirmed his picture for FOX 25.

Lugo says she saw Svay in the nurse's office right before he drowned.

School Superintendent Mary Jo Santoro said at a news conference that the school community is "deeply saddened for the family of the student."

She said the school is still investigating and had no other details to immediately release.

A spokesman for Santoro said grief counseling will be available for students starting Tuesday evening at the school.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

An autopsy is being performed on Svay's body.

On August 17, 2012, a 17-year-old drowned in Lowell High School's pool. He was there to set his schedule for his upcoming senior year, but should not have been in the pool. His death was ruled an accidental drowning.
