Lowell man, 44, dies after Tewksbury crash

TEWKSBURY, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – A Lowell man died following a crash Thursday night on Route 495 in Tewksbury.

Troopers responded to reports of a crash between a 2012 Freightliner tractor-trailer and a 2002 Dodge Caravan minivan on Route 495 southbound, south of Exit 38 just after 11 a.m. The driver of the minivan, 44-year-old Daniel C. Filiatrault, died in the crash.

A preliminary investigation showed the minivan was traveling south on Route 495 when, for reasons still under investigation, it veered right, went through the breakdown lane and hit the guardrail.

After impacting the guardrail, state police say the minivan spun and then re-entered the travel lanes, facing the right guardrail. A tractor-trailer that was also traveling southbound in the second travel lane, struck the right side of the minivan, according to state police. An initial investigation indicates the tractor-trailer came to a controlled stop in the right lane with the minivan against the front of the truck.

Tewksbury firefighters extricated the minivan's driver, Filiatrault. He was taken by ambulance to Lowell General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 53-year-old Brockton man, was not injured. The tractor-trailer is owned by Penske Truck Leasing of Reading, Penn.

The crash remains under investigation. State police say it was raining heavily at the time.
