Local police want power to make arrests outside jurisdiction

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – Local law enforcement agencies want the power to make arrests outside their jurisdiction.

More than 100 Massachusetts chiefs of police are expected to attend the Judiciary Committee hearing Wednesday at the State House in support of  HB 1549, an Act improving apprehension of drunk drivers and other law violators.

The Chiefs of Police Association has supported legislative changes to correct the decision of the SJC in the case of Comm. v. LeBlanc in 1990.

Municipal police want the legal authority to stop a driver for a motor vehicle violation they observe within their own jurisdiction even if it crosses into the adjoining jurisdiction before the vehicle come to an actual stop.
