Level 3 sex offender shares crime during Belmont town meeting

BELMONT, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – At a town meeting meant to inform Belmont residents of the sex offender registry and address their safety concerns, a Level 3 sex offender stood up and spoke freely about his crime in hopes of calming their fears.

Carl Peterson, 48, was charged with indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 years of age and rape and abuse of a child back in 2000. At the town meeting which was organized by the Belmont Police Department, he discussed his crime and said he would answer any and all questions going forward, reports the Belmont Patch.

According to Peterson, the crime in question occurred in 1999 while he was living in Ohio. The crime was a single incident committed against his niece. He admitted to spending four years in prison, but wanted the crowd to know that after spending eight years in therapy another similar incident "will never happen again," reports the newspaper.

During his presentation, residents shouted from the crowd asking Peterson to stop, others asked him to keep going, and many remained in silence. He stressed that his crime was committed against a known family member and not a random child.

Additionally, Peterson said he shares the same concerns regarding sex offenders because he has a 14-year-old daughter.

Peterson moved from Lexington to Bernard Road in Belmont in late July. He shares the home with his wife and daughter.
