Lawrence police officer pulls man from burning building

LAWRENCE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A police officer who was the first on the scene to a fire Monday night helped carry one of the residents out of the burning building.

The officer brought the man out of the home at 14 Worswick Terrace, where firefighters responded to the call for a fire at around 9 p.m.

Officer Carl Farrington was the first on the scene and went into the house, carrying a man out on his back because the man couldn't leave the home on his own, according to the Lawrence Police Chief James Fitzpatrick.

"He took the bull by the horns and charged right up there," Fitzpatrick said.

Both the man, Tom Doyle, and Officer Farrington were taken to the hospital. Doyle was out of the ICU as of Tuesday night and Farrington was treated for smoke inhalation.

"This is something we do every day as police officers, as firefighters, EMT's, we're here to help the public," Farrington said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but they do know it started on a mattress in the home.
