One person dies in Oxford house fire

OXFORD, Mass. — One person died in an overnight house fire in Oxford, the State Fire Marshal's office confirms.

Firefighters were on scene of the fire at 16 Sacarrappa Rd. through Friday morning. The fire was reported just before 8 p.m. Thursday night.

A woman living there came home and said the windows looked foggy - when she opened the door, smoke began pouring out, and she realized the house was on fire.

She lived in the home with her mother.

According to a neighbor, the woman who died in the fire was in her nineties. He says the woman's daughter is in shock.

"It was almost surreal for her," neighbor Santiago Garcia said. "She came home, thought it was a smaller fire than it was ... must be pretty traumatic."

Garcia said two dogs also died in the fire. The daughter is now staying with him and his wife.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they began searching the home for anyone inside - but they were quickly ordered out because of the intensity of the flames.

The State Fire Marshal's office tells Boston 25 News the body of one adult was removed from the scene Friday morning.

That person hasn't yet been identified.

Firefighters had trouble extinguishing the flames because there are no hydrants nearby, and tanker trucks are needed to transport water to the home.

"I could see the flames coming out of the house and the smoke," neighbor Ginette Bailey said. "Next thing you know, the firetrucks were coming and the firemen were in the back and I heard them yelling that they needed more water."

In addition to lack of access to water, firefighters also said the flames were difficult to put out because the home was packed with furniture and other items.

The investigation into what caused the fire is being conduct by the Oxford Fire Department and State Police.
