LAWRENCE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – Lawrence Mayor William Lantigua has appointed his estranged wife to be the chair of the city's licensing board, according to the Eagle Tribune.
Mayra Lantigua has been serving on the board since 2005, but becoming chair would double her annual stipend from the city to $5,000.
Some council members say the appointment is a conflict of interest and may also be a violation of state law.
Board members whose terms have expired are not supposed to serve as chairpersons.
Mayra Lantigua's term expired six years ago, but she was never replaced.
