Landmark Commission proposes changes to Faneuil Hall

BOSTON — The Boston Landmark Commission  is considering changes to Faneuil Hall Marketplace, including additions to outdoor seating.

Owner of the marketplace Ashkenazy Acquisition Corporation proposed the work. The move comes days after a local activist called for changing the name of Faneuil Hall due to its historical ties to the slave trade.

According to paperwork filed by Ashkenazy Acquisitions, the additional outdoor seating is part of the master plan originally presented in September 2014.

The real estate firm had proposed the glass pavilions in March 2015, but only the center pavilions were approved. Tuesday's proposal is an alternate.

The proposed glass pavilions will flank the Quincy Market Building on either side, taking down the current enclosures. The new glass will have the appearance similar to the Apple Store in New York City and Gateshead Millennium Bridge in England.

The pavilions will be heated, and Ashkenazy Acquisitions is proposing to use Eglas, which is billed as an anti-condensation, comfort heating, snow melting solution.

If approved, the project will be completed in five stages over two years.

In addition to the pavilions, the real estate firm is also proposing new patios for McCormick & Schmidt, Starbucks, Ned Devine's, the Salty Dog, and several other patios.
