Kendall Square to get makeover courtesy MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – Kendall Square in Cambridge is getting a 1 million square foot makeover courtesy of MIT.

According to Wicked Local Cambridge, the Planning Board voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a massive MIT project that first came before the board in the spring of 2010. The proposed projected sought to revamp the eastern edge of the MIT campus and redevelop its commercial holdings on 26 acres of land in the square.

The plan is reportedly much different than the original plan submitted three years ago citing a doubling in proposed housing; however, residents and stakeholders at MIT say the proposal does not go far enough to address the need for residential development, particularly student housing, reports the site.

Another meeting is scheduled to take up the petition at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
