CHARLESTON, S.C. — A jury has decided to sentence Dylann Roof to death for killing nine people in a South Carolina church on June 17, 2015.

Last month, the same jury found Roof guilty of 33 separate federal charges stemming from the mass shooting.

Roof represented himself in the penalty portion of the trial.

In a lengthy confession, Roof told FBI agents he wanted to bring back segregation or perhaps start a race war with the slayings.

The jury spent just about three hours deliberating Roof's sentence after closing arguments ended Tuesday.
