Judge denies Burbine's request for funds to be castrated

WAKEFIELD, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A judge has denied a request for public funds by a Wakefield sexual abuse suspect who offered to be castrated in exchange for a lighter sentence.

During a hearing Wednesday, an attorney for John Burbine requested the money so that Burbine could be castrated in exchange for having his sentence reduced to 15 years. His attorney argued that the castration will reduce or stop sexual urges and sexual function, and asked the court for money so his client could talk to a therapist about the procedure.

Barabino tells Fox 25 that his client isn't disputing the charges against him. He wants to work out a deal with the state so he can get out of jail "at some point."

The judge denied the request without prejudice. The issue can be brought up again if the case goes to sentencing.

Burbine was arrested last year and charged with sexually abusing 14 children, including an eight day old infant. He was providing child care when he allegedly committed the crimes.

Laurie Myers, Victims' Advocate said, "John Burbine victimized many children, and he needs to be held criminally responsible for this and he can not be let out of prison. He is dangerous and this castration doesn't make him any less dangerous."

If convicted, Burbine is potentially facing up to life in prison. The state is seeking between 80 and 100 years. He will be back in court Jan. 6 for a status hearing.
