J. Geils dies at the age of 71 in Groton home

GROTON, Mass. — John Warren Geils Jr., the founder and lead guitarist for the J. Geils Band has died at the age of 71.

Geils lived in Groton, Massachusetts, and was found dead at his home after a call for a well-being check around 4 p.m.

The J. Geils Band, which was founded in the late 1960s but reached its pinnacle in the early 1980s, was known for hits like "Love Stinks," ''Freeze Frame" and "Centerfold."

“When you saw a Geils concert, usually by the end of it you couldn't even talk anymore because you lost your voice, can't clap, the band would always beat you,” WZLX DJ Carter Alan said.

J. Geils Band singer Peter Wolf posted a tribute on Facebook saying, "Thinking of all the times we kicked it high and rocked down the house. R.I.P. Jay Geils."

Police said the death does not appear suspicious, but they are investigating the exact cause of death.
