Investigators ID man found dead inside home that exploded

SALEM, N.H. — Investigators have identified the man found dead inside a booby-trapped home that exploded and caught fire Monday night in Salem, New Hampshire.

Charles F. Hill, 55, the homeowner, was found dead in the basement from an apparent self-inflected gunshot wound to the head.

Demolition crews tore down what was left of the destroyed home on Tuesday night. It had been condemned for years, but a search of the home after the explosion revealed weapons and ammunition.

Investigators said Hill was found with an unknown type 7.62mm long rifle, a 9mm handgun, a .45 caliber handgun, two knives and 136 rounds of ammunition for the three guns, 91 of which were for the rifle.

In addition, more than 1,700 rounds of ammunition and four exploded magazines were found in the home.

Investigators said the home was also set up with booby trap in an attempt to keep people out.

Neighbors said they have had a long history with Hill, who they say has been a problem for years.
