Investigators: 7 people spotted near Mass. reservoir no threat

BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (AP) — Investigators have determined that seven people spotted by police in a restricted area near the Quabbin Reservoir have no connection to any criminal activity or groups.

The five men and two women will be summoned to district court to face trespassing charges.

A state trooper saw two cars parked near the reservoir at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, and seven people walking toward them from the reservoir. They told police they recently graduated from chemical engineering programs and were curious about the 39-square-mile reservoir with a 412 billion gallon capacity that supplies the greater Boston area.

Police say they are from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Singapore with addresses in Amherst, Cambridge, Sunderland, Northampton and New York City.

No names have been released.

Testing has shown no threat to the water supply.
