Interim welfare chief named following release of waste reports

BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) The chief of staff for the Mass. Human Health Services has been named the interim commissioner for the Department of Transitional Assistance in the wake of the former commissioner's resignation.

According to a press release from the HHS, Stacey Monahan has served as their chief of staff since 2011.

The announcement comes one day after the Boston Herald reported that Health and Human Services Secretary John Polanowicz asked for and received the resignation of former Commissioner Daniel Curley.

Curley was asked to step down after an internal report found that nearly 3,100 out of 47,000 families receiving taxpayer-funded benefits and contacted through a voter registration mailer were unaccounted for. Their accounts are being closed.

The department also said it overpaid federal food stamp recipients by almost $28 million since 2010.

The Inspector General found the Department of Transitional Assistance handed out about $25 million in benefits to people with unconfirmed eligibility.
