IndyCar puts the brakes on Boston

BOSTON — A source confirmed to FOX25 that IndyCar has pulled out of Boston.

The race was scheduled in South Boston over the Labor Day weekend. Organizers had hoped to construct a temporary street course around the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center.

Patrick Brophy, Chief of Operations for the City of Boston issued the following statement Friday:

"The City of Boston will always be open to opportunities that will positively showcase our city, however as we continued to work with Boston Grand Prix they were unwilling or unable to meet the necessary requirements to hold an event of this size. The Mayor feels strongly in protecting the taxpayers and limiting the impact to residents, and we are not shy that we held them to very high standards."

Mayor Martin Walsh and organizers signed an agreement last May calling for annual races for up to five years.

The event was expected to bring in millions of dollars to the city.

A source told FOX25 that they will seek other options to have the race in a different city.

Many South Boston residents in of the neighborhood had ongoing concerns. Race organizers said the average speed during the race would have been 85 mph, but top speeds would more than double that.
