South Boston native Stephen Lynch announced his candidacy for U.S. Senate on Thursday. In honor of Rep. Lynch's announcement, here is a look at some of South Boston's most famous residents.

Edward Lawrence Logan

Yes, that Logan. Edward Logan was born on January 20, 1875. He attended Boston Latin School and Harvard before joining the military. Logan was the leader of several military organizations, but he also served as a Boston city councilor, state representative, and senator. Logan Airport was named after him in 1956.

John William McCormack

John William McCormack was born in Boston on Dec. 21, 1891. McCormack practiced law in Boston before serving in the Mass. House of Representatives and state Senate. McCormack served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1928 until his retirement in 1971. He served as Speaker of the House from 1962 to 1971.

John Joseph Moakley

"Joe" Moakley was born in Southie on April 27, 1927. He attended Suffolk Law before becoming a state rep. and eventually a state senator. Moakley served as a U.S. Congressman from the Ninth district.

William Michael Bulger

William "Billy" Bulger was born on February 2, 1934. He served as President of the Mass. Senate and president of the University of Massachusetts.

Ray Flynn

Former Boston Mayor Ray Flynn was born on July 22, 1939. He served as a member of the Mass. House of Representatives and the Boston City Council before becoming mayor in 1984. Flynn was mayor until 1993 when he was appointed Ambassador to the Holy See by President Bill Clinton.

Stephen Lynch

Rep. Stephen Lynch was born on March 31, 1955. He was an ironworker and a lawyer before becoming a U.S. congressman. Lynch has also served as a state rep. and senator.
