Hundreds lace up to remember Abington fallen soldier

ABINGTON, Mass. — Hundreds of people laced up to remember a fallen soldier.

The third annual Sgt. Daniel Vasselian Memorial Road Race honored the sacrifice of Marine Sgt. Daniel Vasselian.

The Abington native was killed in Afghanistan in 2013 while serving his third tour of duty.

Friends and family were at the race, remembering Vasselian.

"He was one of a kind. Funny, caring giving person.  I feel like his life mission was to help people and that's why he joined the military just to be part of something bigger than himself.  He died doing that and helping each one of us here, so to be able to help other people in his memory was really special for us," said Erin Vasselian, Daniel's widow.

Erin has created a memorial fund in her husband's name, giving scholarships to Abington High School seniors and also assisting Massachusetts military families that are struggling financially.

"Right away after he died we knew we had to do something to give back and make something positive from this tragedy."
