Human bones found in Brockton belong to man missing since 2011

BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) - The human bones found in a wooded area of Brockton last week have been identified as those of a city man reported missing nearly three years ago.

The state medical examiner's office has determined that the full skeleton found by a hiker in the wooded area not far from Massasoit Community College were those of Bruce Gomes.

Gomes' cause of death and how long his remains have been in the woods remain under investigation.

Gomes was 23 years old when his family reported him missing in January 2011.

Plymouth district attorney's spokeswoman Bridget Norton Middleton tells

there is no connection between the Gomes case and human remains found in a burning barrel Wednesday night in Bridgewater.
