Horse barns could delay casino construction at Suffolk Downs

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Plans for a casino at Suffolk Downs may have hit a bit of a historic snag.

The race track wants to move 30 horse stables on the Revere side to the East Boston side of the track to make way for a new casino.

But according to an article in the Boston Herald, The barns were built in 1935 and are listed as historic landmarks.

The Massachusetts Historic Commission is claiming that moving or destroying the barns would have an "adverse effect" on the history and character of the track.

Suffolk Downs and Mohegan Sun may have to pay to study ways to move the barns without altering their historical presence, which could delay the project, according to the Herald.

The chief operating officer of Suffolk Downs told the paper that such measures are just part of the standard process to get a permit.
