Homicide suspect surrenders to police after SWAT surrounds Walpole apartment

WALPOLE, Mass. — There were some tense moments for residents of a Walpole apartment complex Tuesday night after a homicide suspect from Boston barricaded himself inside.

Luckily, after hours of negotiation, the suspect peacefully surrendered.

The ordeal began around 4:30 p.m. after Walpole police said they received a call from police in Boston that they were looking for a man by the name of Kyle Williams-Gathers.

The Boston Police Dept. Fugitive Unit had a warrant out for Williams, who is a suspect in the death of Shaquille Browder. Browder was shot in a Burger King parking lot in Dorchester in January.

"This brazen daytime shooting was very troubling. The efforts of my homicide investigators and prosecutors from the District Attorney's office led to the quick identification of the person responsible for Shaquille's death. I commend the efforts, patience and professionalism of all those involved in the arrest this morning in Walpole. We will not rest until every homicide is solved," said BPD Commissioner Evans.

Boston Police told Walpole Police they believed Williams had been at the Preserve Apartments on Route 1.

“We conducted surveillance for several hours,” Walpole police Chief John Carmichael said. “Ultimately we saw him show up in a motor vehicle and going into one of the apartments.”

It turns out there was a woman in the apartment.

“We knew there was someone else in the apartment, so we backed off and called Metro SWAT as well as our crisis negotiating team,” Carmichael said.

Police said they were able to make contact with Williams, but he refused to come out of the apartment.

At one point, police used a robot to look around inside.

“Actually one of our crisis negotiators reached out to him via cellphone and we were able to maintain contact with him several times throughout the night,” Carmichael said.

Williams stopped to surrender several times, but then had second thoughts, police said.

Williams eventually exited the apartment and peacefully surrendered to police.

He will be arraigned in court Wednesday, and is expected to be charged with murder.
