Road reopens hours after major gas leak in Quincy

QUINCY, Mass. — A road in Quincy has finally reopened hours after a major gas leak forced some residents to be evacuated from their homes early Friday morning.

Officials told FOX25 that a crew working in the area hit the gas main along West Squantum Street near London Street just after 2:30 a.m.

Two multi-family homes with eight people were evacuated from the area and were taken to a local hotel to stay warm. Another family left on their own, according to officials at the scene.

"It's natural gas. It's flammable, it's explosive," Quincy fire Deputy Chief Gary Smyth said. "It's all about ignition sources and keeping the scene safe. That's why we made a decision to evacuate a couple of those homes."

Officials also warned residents in the area to not turn on any lights to avoid any sort of spark.

The road was closed between Harvard Street to the Milton town line for hours but was fully reopened to traffic after 9:30 a.m.

No other information was released.
