Holyoke teen dies after falling into river

HOLYOKE, Mass. (AP) — Authorities say a Holyoke teenager has died after falling from a 50-foot cliff into the Connecticut River.

Police say 18-year-old Jonathan Ramos fell from the cliff in an area known as High Rock at about 7:45 p.m. Monday.

Detective Lt. Matthew Moriarty says strong currents in the river swollen by recent heavy rains swept Ramos away.

Moriarty says Ramos' body was found around 9:20 p.m. by the South Hadley Fire Department and taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Ramos was with friends in area that is popular with swimmers, even though it is not a public swimming area. Police did not say whether Ramos was swimming.
